Because we live in Arizona, swim lessons are just a necessary expense during the summer. That is, if I want to be able to sleep at night (there are a lot of pools in our neck of the woods). And I wanted to put that money to good use and practice with the kids. So we bid on a hotel and got a really good price for this place in Scottsdale with a humongous, amazing pool and just went! The pool really was the best part. Three of my children loved it and would spend three hours at a time there. My third-born, ahem, spent much of the pool time pouting, "I'm cold! It's scary! Hold me! I don't like it! All done! Need to go potty!" So Marty and I took turns running Gabe to the potty (he discovered a reliable excuse) and then giving up and staying at the hotel room.
(Here they are, very tuckered out, watching Tangled and eating our go-to summer traveling food, chicken salad sandwhiches.)
So the pool was great, we played for hours upon hours...but everything else constitutes the question mark in the post's title; I don't know if I could call the staycation an overall success. The room was teeny tiny and we had to set up the pack and play halfway into the bathroom just for it to fit (and then move it around anytime anyone needed to use the bathroom. There were only a few channels (which I guess isn't a big deal since there is probably nothing on that is suitable for kids anyway, but since we don't get TV at our house it's kind of a treat). The AC had a lock on it, so it never really got lower than 77ish in our room, which felt quite stuffy. I mean, part of the reason for getting a hotel/pool is to escape the heat. So I suppose as far as our room went, we got what we paid for. But it's ok because we got more than what we paid for in the pool.
The other big issue was the sleeping at night. We lined up the older three in the bed horizontally, and listening to them try to fall asleep in the same bed was completely hilarious, thanks to Gabe. He is so delighted every time he gets to be one of the big kids. He kept trying to get their attention and show off and be funny, looong after BandB had already fallen asleep. So we spent a fair amount of time trying to stifle our giggles on the other bed. But then there was Camille. She did alright falling asleep, she cried for just a minute or two and we thought we were in the clear. But then around midnight she woke up crying and knew we were right there next to her and would NOT go back to sleep. She was totally working Marty. She'd be quiet for a minute, but then every time she heard him so much as breath she'd cry out, "Da! Da! Dadadadadada!" Not wanting to wake up the neighbors, we thought we'd try her out in our bed. So then we spent the better part of an hour trying to get her to stop climbing around on us and just lay down already. She was WIDE awake. We talked about driving her around to get her to sleep, but knew that she'd wake up as soon as she hit that pack-and-play. So finally some time after 1:00 Marty finally decided to just drive the 50 minutes home with her and try to get some sleep. What. a. stinker. Apparently she went home and slept in her crib until 9:30 a.m. when Marty got worried and went in to check on her.
So that morning the kids woke up thinking I was teasing them that Daddy and Camille went home. But we had some cereal, went back to the pool, and had quite an enjoyable morning (but don't tell Marty). He met back up with us and went swimming one last time and it was fine. But after that, Marty swore off the California trip coming up in October. That we have been planning for four years. And meticulously saving for. And have been telling the kids about. By the way, after that we went to Utah and decided this was Camille's last try. If we didn't get any sleep while traveling there, we were calling off Disneyland. And we got very little sleep. And called it off. But now we have a new and improved October plan...more about that later....
So all in all...I guess it was a great staycation....?
